Popcorn Kernel Mosaic for PreschoolersCreate a mosaic design from dyed popcorn kernels! An interactive process art tutorial for your preschool students. A popcorn kernel mosaic is a great process art activity to include in your Movies and Popcorn theme. Food coloring is a staple in the preschool classroom as it us used for dying rice, pasta, and the recent favorite, popcorn kernels. Popcorn kernel mosaics are the perfect opportunity to teach preschoolers about mosaics. Mosaics are a form of art that preschoolers might be unfamiliar with. Start by introducing them to different mosaic art pieces, and they will be fascinated. And, then invite them to join in the steps to make their own! Supplies Needed:You Will Need:
*Teacher tip: If you are having preschoolers assist with the dying using a ziplock bag is an easier way to dye the kernels. Process:Begin by separating kernels into bowls based on the amount of colors you plan to use. We used three colors so we separated into 3 bowls. However, if you are including preschoolers in the process of dying the kernels a ziplock bag works great for shaking and coating the kernels while keeping hands clean. Add in about a dime sized amount of hand sanitizer to the top of the bowl, then immediately add 6-10 drops of desired food coloring. Using a craft stick stir the kernels to make sure the food coloring and hand sanitizer are evenly distributed. Pour the kernels one color at a time onto a large tray ensuring the colors are separate and allow for adequate drying time. Give the kernels a touch to ensure they are completely dry. If colors are transferred to your hands, they need more drying time. After the kernels have dried, invite preschoolers to arrange the colored kernels any way the would like. Demonstrate mosaic designs for preschoolers but allow them to create without a template or premade design! You can extend this activity by doing a gallery walk-through. Once preschoolers have finished their designs, leave them on display, and as a class, walk through and look at each student's mosaic! Popcorn kernel mosaics can also be created on cardstock, and preschoolers can glue their designs to make them permanent. Cardstock is a bit sturdier, making it easier for preschoolers to lift when their designs are dry. You May Also Like:
